Biography

DRAŽEN KOŠMERL – Croatian accordionist and pedagogue, born in 1966 in Koprivnica. He graduated in classical accordion at the Ukrainian National Tchaikovsky Academy of Music in Kiev (Ukraine), where he is also finishing his post-graduate studies in classical accordion. He studied with Vera Višošević, Slavko Magdić, Ivan Jaškević and Pavel Fenjuk. In addition to regular studies, he trained with the most famous harmonica pedagogues and artists. He is the winner of numerous awards and recognitions at domestic and international competitions. He is a graduate of the 34th World Accordion Trophy in La Chaux de Fonds (Switzerland) in 1984. He received a number of awards and recognitions for his work. He is the recipient of several awards from the City of Rijeka for exceptional work with students, recognition for participation in the 63rd Coupe Mondiale in Varaždin, recognition from the Agency for Education of the Republic of Croatia for excellent work results, recognition for a special contribution to the development of classical accordion studies at Jurja Dobrila University in Pula .

He is a member of the judging commissions at national and international competitions: regional and national competitions of HDGPP, International Meeting of Accordionists in Pula, Accordion World Cup, Republic Competition of Music Schools of Serbia, International Music Festival "Accordion Days" Bijeljina (BiH), International Music Festival AKORDEON ART Sarajevo (BIH), Australian International Accordion Championships and others.

In his teaching career so far, he has won over 100 awards and recognitions at national and international competitions. He is working on the improvement of pedagogical literature for accordion, he is the author of a number of arrangements of works by various authors for solo accordion and chamber ensembles, he holds seminars for accordion.

He is one of the editors of the monograph "Time for memory" Two decades of classical accordion studies in Croatia, published by Jurja Dobrila University in Pula, he is the author of the expert article "Chamber Ensemble as genre of Bayan-Accordion performing art" published by the Academy of Music "P. I. Tchaikovsky" in Kiev. He is the co-author of the first sheet music edition of works by Croatian composers for classical accordion called "Anthology of works by Croatian composers for classical accordion" published in 2019 on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of accordion studies at the Academy of Music in Pula, published by the Juraj Dobrila University in Pula.

Under his mentorship, over 30 final and graduation concerts of classical accordion students at the Music Academy in Pula were successfully defended. He works on the improvement of study programs at the Academy of Music in Pula, he is one of the authors of the study program for the postgraduate specialist study of classical accordion.

At the Academy of Music in Pula, he is employed in the artistic and teaching position of an associate professor for the courses Classical Accordion, Concerto for Accordion and Orchestra and Chamber Music. He served as a member of the University's Quality Committee, head of the Classical Accordion Department.

From 2017 to 2023, he served as the dean of the Academy of Music in Pula.

He is a member of professional associations, the Croatian Society of Accordion Pedagogues (HDHP), the Croatian Society of Music and Dance Pedagogues (HDGPP), the Croatian Society of Music Artists (HDGU).

He played with the orchestras of the Opera SNG Maribor, the Varaždin Chamber Orchestra, the orchestra of the Opera HNK I.pl. Zajc Rijeka, the Camerata Austriaca orchestra, collaborated with the conductors: Simon Robinson, Igor Vlajnić, Zvonimir Hačko, Yuko Tanaka and others.

He particularly cherishes chamber music in ensembles with voice, cello, clarinet, piano. In 2011, he founded Duo AccoVoice (soprano, accordion), and in 2014. Trio Forza (soprano, clarinet, accordion).

He performs in the country and abroad, in Slovenia, Germany, Italy, Ukraine, Russia, USA. Records performances at the Academy of Music in Ljubljana, Music Academy "G. Tarttini" in Trieste, Music Academy "P.I. Tchaikovsky" in Kiev, Music Academy "Gnesin" in Moscow. He played in halls such as: the Great Hall of the Academy "Gnesin" in Moscow, the Philharmonic Hall in Odessa, the Concert Hall of the Academy "P.I. Tchaikovsky" in Kiev. He performed at the festivals "Two days and two nights of new music" in Odessa, "Day of Ukrainian Accordion" in Kiev, "Day of bayan, accordion and harmonica 2017" in Moscow, Meetings of accordionists in Pula 2018, Lubenika music evenings 2020, and others.

His repertoire includes works by various authors and eras such as Bach, Scarlatti, Vivaldi, Händel, Mozart, Berinski, Gubaidulina, Kusjakov, Londonov, Lorentzen, Podgaits, Runčak, Piazzolla, Brajković, Bobić, Josipović, and others.
