A three-year scientific project was realized from October 1, 2018 to September 30, 2021. The project leader was Dr Sabina Vidulin, Assoc. Prof. while Dr Marlena Plavšić, Asst. Prof. from the Faculty of Philosophy in Pula and Dr Valnea Žauhar, Asst. Prof. from the Faculty of Philosophy in Rijeka collaborated in the project.
The goal of the project was to compare standard and cognitive-emotional listening to music in general school, to determine the characteristics of the cognitive-emotional approach and to offer a novel didactical strategy in the field of music listening in general school. The research included 557 students and 14 teachers. The findings indicate advantages of the cognitive-emotional approach to music listening by using multimodal interactive activities. The characteristics of the cognitive-emotional approach to music listening, the research results and the subsequent didactical strategies for listening and understanding music can be found in various publications: from the scientific book Cognitive-emotional listening to music at school, to seven published papers (the eighth was accepted for publication) in which music listening in music teaching is elaborated. The papers were published in A1 journals: Music Education Research, Musicological Annual, Methodical Review and in proceedings of international symposia (A2).
The comprehensive approach of cognitive-emotional music listening was presented at international conferences in Croatia, Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Spain and Poland, at a webinar in Slovenia and at professional conferences in Croatia (12 in total). On the topic of cognitive-emotional music listening, two diploma theses were defended by students of the Academy of Music in Pula, while in several final and diploma theses related to the field of music listening, the didactical paradigm of cognitive-emotional music listening was used and integrated into the work.
